Setting up a space for Blood Donation...

Writer's picture: Kartiki ArondekarKartiki Arondekar

The discovery of the blood group system by Karl Landsteiner laid the groundwork for safe blood transfusions. This Austrian physician, who is celebrated on World Blood Donor Day, is considered the "founder" of modern blood transfusion. To honor Landsteiner's contribution and raise awareness about the importance of blood donation, four major organisations joined forces. In 2004, the World Health Organization (WHO) established the first World Blood Donor Day. Today, the world will unite behind the theme "20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors!” (Resource: https://www.jagranjosh.com/general-knowledge/world-blood-donor-day-1718265020-1)

My professional perspective towards this noble activity is that, we as Architects, need to create a welcoming and efficient space that prioritizes both safety and comfort. Here's how we can achieve that:

Hygiene First:

  • Double Doors: We'll have a separate entrance and exit for donors to maintain a clean flow. This minimizes cross-contamination risks.

  • Designated Phlebotomy Stations: Each station will have ample space for equipment, with a dedicated sink for frequent handwashing. Flooring will be seamless and easy to sanitize.

  • Clear Signage: Large, clear signs will direct donors for registration, screening, and donation areas. This minimizes confusion and prevents unnecessary crowding.

Efficient Phlebotomy Flow:

  • Open Layout: The space should be open yet sectioned. This allows staff to easily monitor donors while maintaining a sense of privacy.

  • Comfortable Recliners: Invest in comfortable, adjustable recliners for blood donation. This helps donors relax during the process.

  • Privacy Dividers: Curtains or dividers can be used to create a sense of privacy for each donor while maintaining an open layout.

Ambiance:

  • Bright and Welcoming: We want the space to feel bright and airy, not sterile. Natural light is a plus, but warm lighting is crucial.

  • Informative Displays: Decorate with eye-catching posters highlighting the importance of blood donation and the impact it has on lives.

  • Upbeat Music: Play calming yet upbeat music in the background to create a positive atmosphere.

Donor Recovery Area:

  • Dedicated Cafe Space: Set up a cafe area with comfortable seating. Offer a selection of quick sandwiches, tea, coffee, and juices. This allows donors to replenish fluids and energy after donation.

  • Observation Area: A designated area with recliners should be available for post-donation monitoring. Trained staff will be present to address any concerns.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Clearly Marked Exits: Ensure clear signage for emergency exits and have them easily accessible.

  • Emergency Response Team: Have a team of trained staff readily available to handle any medical emergencies that might arise.

  • First-Aid Kits: First-aid kits should be readily available at designated stations throughout the blood bank.

By following these steps, we can create a safe, efficient, and donor-friendly environment for Blood Donors, making the blood donation experience as positive as possible. Remember, a well-designed space can significantly contribute to a successful noble cause.

With every project, the site context, the user and the client are unique. The climatic conditions, environment and the local authority regulations and building codes, where the built will be is different. With us at Design3.14, the solutions provided are unique as it is based on the in-depth study of all the parameters affecting or supporting the project.
